Son of Ed and Selma Rappuhn, Richard grew up on a farm and was an active member of FFA. He graduated from Sultan High School in 1952 and then studied animal husbandry at Washington State College. In college he participated in ROTC, so upon graduation he entered the army reserves and began selling baby chicks for H & N. Co. of Redmond. On November 7, 1959 he married Sharon Ruby Miller in Kitsap County. In 1964 he moved his family to Whidbey Island where worked as a poultry farm manager. On July 20, 1983 he married Patricia Dawn Morgan in Island County.
He was survived by his wife, Patricia/four daughters, Mrs. Erik (Tamara) Dow, Mrs. Keith (Teresa) Forsyth, Tina Rappuhn and Tonya Rappuhn; and two step-daughters, Mrs. David (Wendy) Robbins and Shelly Sowers.
