Helen graduated from Douglass High School in Baltimore and was a long-time housekeeper for Herbert R. O'Conor, who was State Attorney General and, later, Governor, which brought Helen to the Governor's Mansion. She continued working at the Governor's Mansion for 30 years, retiring in 1979.

Helen was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church of Annapolis and the King's Daughters.

At the time of her passing, Helen was survived by her sister, Dollette, and several nieces and nephews. She was the widow of Alton Barrett.
