Janie Walne Goolsby Poodry passed away on November 12, 2016 in Kennebunk, Maine. A distinguished contemporary artist and educator, she took her M.F.A. at Texas Women's University in 1946, studied with Hans Hoffman in Massachusetts, exhibited frequently throughout her career, and was Associate Professor in the Art Department faculty at the University of Memphis for many years.
Born in Coldwater, Mississippi in 1923, daughter of William Arthur and Nettie Bramlett Goolsby, her siblings, now deceased, were William Arthur, James Edward and Virginia Goolsby. In 1950 she married the late Leonard Poodry , and is survived by her children Deborah and Sage Poodry. treasured nephews and nieces, cousins, friends, colleagues and students.
Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, November 19 from 11AM until 12:30PM, immediately followed by a funeral service at 12:30pm at the Johnson Funeral home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick, Maine.
In lieu of flowers Janie's family wishes to establish a scholarship in her name at the University of Memphis, College of Communication and Fine Arts. Donations in her memory may be sent to
