Stan Spotts, 76, of Jacksonville, died Monday, July 10, 2006, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. He was born March 5, 1930, in Jacksonville, the son of D.M. and Hazel Strickler Spotts. He married Jean Simmons on July 8, 1956, at First Baptist Church in Jacksonville, and she survives. He is also survived by one daughter, Diane (husband, Tim) Tappe of Quincy; one son, Brian (wife, Jane) Spotts of Algonquin; five grandchildren, David Lemieux of Burlington, Vermont, Savannah Smith of Quincy, Tyler Spotts of Oxford, Mississippi, Kraeton Moll of Algonquin, and Taylor Tappe of Bloomingdale; his mother, Hazel Spotts of Jacksonville; one sister, Sue (husband, Tom) Mussatto of Warden, and one brother, Gaylord Spotts of Phoenix, Arizona. Mr. Spotts played professional baseball for the Washington Senators following his graduation from Jacksonville High School. He was later drafted into the United States Air Force, where he also played baseball, and served in South Africa during the Korean War. After the war, he worked as a professional umpire for Major League Baseball, before returning to Jacksonville as sports editor for the Jacksonville Journal Courier. Mr. Spotts then began a long career in photo finishing, working for Kodak for nearly 40 years. His retirement years were spent working with Airsman-Hires Funeral Homes and Perfection Vault Company. Mr. Spotts was in the first class to be inducted to the Jacksonville High School Sports Hall of Fame. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Jacksonville Elks, and Harmony Lodge #3, A.F. & A.M. He was an avid sports fan, loved fishing, and enjoyed taking his family to see the Rockettes in Chicago at Christmas. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 15, 2006, at Williamson Funeral Home, with burial at Winchester City Cemetery.
