Elmer Perkins Ray, Sr. was born in Paris, Tennessee on October 29, 1929; he went to be with the Lord on November 21, 2016. Elmer was a graduate of Southside High School and Memphis State University. He played football and baseball and is a member of the University of Memphis Athletic Hall of Fame. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force.
Elmer served as Athletic Director, football and baseball coach at Whitehaven High School where he won 8 league Championships and a State Championship in 1963 in football. In baseball he won 9 League and 7 District Championships.
Elmer left coaching and served as principal of Woodale Junior High and retired as principal of Hillcrest High School in 1996.
Elmer was preceded in death by his loving wife of 44 years, Johnnie Ray. He is survived by two sons Elmer (Priscilla) Ray, Jr. and Butch (Francene) Ray; grandchildren Elmer Perkins Ray III, Tim (Karen) Ray, John (Heather) Ray and Joshua (Leslie) Ray, and two great-grandchildren Lily Ray and Turner Ray.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 27, 2016 from 3-5 p.m. at Memphis Funeral Home, 5599 Poplar Avenue. On Monday, November 28 the family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until noon, funeral services will be held at noon; all at Collierville United Methodist Church, 454 West Poplar Avenue, Collierville, TN 38017. Interment will follow at Forest Hill Midtown, Memphis. In lieu of flowers gifts in memory of Coach Ray may be offered to the charity of the donor's choice
