Margaret M. Neese, 85, of South Jacksonville, died Tuesday, January 31, 2006, at Prairie Village Healthcare Center in Jacksonville. She was born July 12, 1920, in LaGrange, the daughter of William and Maria Asummaa Masley of Downers Grove. She married Arthur Bert Mapes on September 12, 1942, in Geneva. She later married James A. Neese on May 19, 1967 in St. Charles, Missouri, and he survives. She is also survived by one son, Herbert G. (wife, Ida) Mapes of Silver Springs, Maryland; one step-daughter, Roselyn Jarden of Woodson; one sister, Harriet Strom of Geneva; one brother, Lowell Masley of Sun City, Arizona; one granddaughter, Sonja Mapes of New York, New York; two step-granddaughters, Anastasia (husband, Brent) Alsman of Bloomington and Iris Jarden of Woodson; and two step-grandsons, James (wife, Carrie) Filla of Jacksonville and Timothy Smith of Jacksonville. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur Masley and Dr. John W. Masley. Margaret and her husband were also guardians of and helped raise two nephews, Darrel (wife, Jane) Gregory of Effingham, and Kevin (wife, Becky) Gregory of Chatham; and one niece, Theresa (husband, Carl) Stutler of Indianapolis, Indiana. She is also survived by many other nieces and nephews. Mrs. Neese graduated from Geneva Community High school in Geneva and attended Felt & Tarrent Comptometer School and International Business Machine School, both in the Merchandise Mart Building in Chicago; Brown Business School in Jacksonville, and took many classes at Olney Jr. College in Olney. Margaret worked in accounting and secretarial jobs throughout her life. She began working as a telephone operator for Illinois Bell Telephone in Geneva; later as a Key Punch Operator in the IBM Department for Howell Company in St. Charles; accounts payable, Geneva Modern Kitchens in Geneva; Perpetual Inventory at Speiss Company in Elgin; 14 years as Personnel Secretary at Anderson Clayton Company in Jacksonville and manager of the Anderson Clayton Credit Union; secretary of the Purchasing and Traffic Department at Anaconda Wire and Cable, Flora, Illinois; and was self-employed for several years as owner and manager of Altronics (sales and service of electronic equipment) in Flora. She was also a sales associate for Century 21 Real Estate in Flora; and served as part-time office manager, book keeper, secretary, and librarian at Heartland School of Business in Jacksonville. Margaret was very active in volunteer work. During World War II, she helped the Red Cross and in the local hospital in Geneva. She did volunteer work in the Recreation Department of the Jacksonville State Hospital and was a very active member of the Clay County Hospital Auxiliary and the Clay County Hospital Gift Shop in Flora. She was also a member of the Clay County HEA, an active member of the South Jacksonville HEA unit, and a member of the Jacksonville Area Genealogical and Historical Society. Margaret was also a past member of the Council for Exceptional Children in Jacksonville and the Embarrass Valley Chapter for Exceptional Children in Flora. She was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, and was past president of the LWML, and served with the Willing Workers, Greeters, Day Care Board, Care and Share, Human Resource Committee, Evangelism Committee, and was the church coordinator for the Passavant Hospital Doorbell Dinners. Her hobbies were sewing, knitting, crewelwork, refinishing furniture, painting, crafts, reading, fishing, bowling, and watching sports. Margaret had many friends from Geneva, Jacksonville, and Flora. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 4, 2006, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, with burial at Winchester City Cemetery in Winchester
