Berdinus A. Benson, well known pioneer of Adams, passed away at his home, 3 miles north of Adams on Saturday, July 9th. Death came as a result of a stroke. The first stroke came in March 1931, which paralized his left side and another one a few days ago which proved fatal.

Berdinus Benson was born on board the ship in which his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Benson, were migrating to America. They immediately came to the vicinity of Adams and for a short time made their home with Mr. and Mrs. John Osmundson, but soon bought a farm in Clayton township.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Norwegian Lutheran Church and remained faithful to it.

On May 15, 1887, he was united in marriage to Hannah Johnson, also of Clayton, and four years later bought 80 acres adjoining his father's farm. This remained his home as long as he lived. He died at the age of 65 years and is survived by his widow and five children Oscar, of Adams, John Benson and Mrs. J.B. Sathre of Austin, Mrs. James Conlon, LeRoy, Mrs. Melvin Lewison, of Adams. One son, Alfred, preceded his father to his grave one and one half years ago. He also leaves ten grandchildren, and M. N. Helgeson who has made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Benson for many years.

Mr. Benson was always active in the affairs of his community and his church. He was public-spirited, ever willing to help whenever assistance was needed. He held many positions of trust, being a member of the school board for many years, Township Assessor for ?8 years, Town Treasurer for three terms and faithfully served the Marshall Congregation, as janitor, usher, delegate and trustee.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 at the home and at 2:00 o'clock from the Marshall Church. His body was laid to rest in Marshall Lutheran Cemetery, Rev. Alfred Brievik officiated.

There is no mention of where the following article is from. It may be from "The History of Mower County." From the Harvey Sathre Estate:

B. A. Benson, industrious farmer, and assessor of the town of Clayton, was born on the Atlantic ocean, June 1, 1867, while his parents, Andrew and Molina (Rasmusson?) Benson, were on their way from Norway to America. Upon their arrival in America, the family came to Mower County, and the father worked out for several years in Marshall Township, afterwards purchasing eighty acres in Clayton Township, where he followed diversified farming the remainder of his life. B. A. Benson was educated in the Mower County schools, worked on the farm with his father, and at the age of twenty-one years started in life for himself by renting land. Four years later, he purchased eighty acres of land in Section 31, Clayton Township, adjoining his father's eighty. He now owns a quarter section, and its excellent appearance is due to his unremitting toil. He performed the difficult task of breaking the land, and this done, he erected comfortable buildings, planted trees, installed modern machinery and bought a suitable complement of tools. Aside from carrying on general farming, he raises cattle for beef and dairy purposes and sells cream to the Adams Cooperative Creamery, in which he is one of the stockholders, and of which he was one year a director. Mr. Benson is a Republican in politics, has been assessor nine years, and was school district clerk of district 83 for ten years. The subject of this sketch was married May 15, 1887 to Hannah Johnson, and this union has been blessed with six children: Alfred, Oscar, John, Mabel, Bertha, Josie.

Information from the Harvey Sathre Estate:

Berdinus' birth year is listed as 1867. However, his mother, Malene, did not leave Norway until 1868, which would mean he was born in Norway. However, he was not listed on the ship's registry, so it is more likely that he was born in 1868.
