Bernard E. Spix Jr., 73, of Bethel Township, formerly of Springdale and Vandergrift, died Friday (May 2, 2003) in UPMC St. Margaret, Pittsburgh.

Born Dec. 30, 1929, in Springdale, he also lived in Vandergrift for a number of years prior to moving to Bethel Township.

He was a 1948 graduate of Springdale High School.

Following his discharge from the Marine Corps in 1952, he entered the Air National Guard of Pennsylvania, from which he was discharged in 1956. He was discharged from the Air Force in 1959, having served with the Air National Guard of the United States until 1958. A veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars, he received two Purple Hearts.

A purchasing agent, he worked for PPG in Springdale, and later at their Allison Park location until his retirement.

Mr. Spix attended Christ the King Catholic Parish and was an Elks member, both in Leechburg, member of the Dutch Club in Aspinwall, the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, all in Vandergrift.

A former Vandergrift council member, he had been a Westmoreland County Community College board member, and was an honorary member of the Vandergrift Fire Department No. 1.

He enjoyed playing golf. In his youth, he was a Golden Gloves boxer in Pittsburgh.

Survivors include five sons, Bernard Spix III of Aspinwall, Fred D. (Lori) Spix, D. David Spix, and D. Edward Spix, all of Vandergrift, and Karl H. Spix of Hawaii; a daughter, Mrs. Betsy (Clyde) Clever of Bethel Township; nine grandchildren; a brother, Charles T. Spix of Springdale; and three sisters, Elizabeth Scott of Penn Hills, Mary Lou Spix of Springdale and Mrs. Shirley (Jim) Davis of Lady Lake, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his wife, L. Jane Shape Spix in 1992; and his parents, Bernard E. Sr. and Violet Mae Randolph Spix.

Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. today and 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the DUNMIRE-KERR FUNERAL HOME, 244 Franklin Ave., Vandergrift. Christian Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Monday in St. Gertrude Roman Catholic Church, Vandergrift, with the Rev. Leo Rothrauff officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell, with full military honors.
