Bernice Sharp Black, 85, of Concordia Lutheran Ministries, Cabot, Jefferson Township, formerly of Apollo, died unexpectedly at 4 p.m. Monday (April 28, 2003) in West Penn Hospital, Pittsburgh. She had been a patient there for 18 days.

Born May 22, 1917, in Vandergrift, she lived in Apollo for most of her life prior to moving to Concordia.

She was a teacher for the Apollo School District for 28 years before retiring in 1968.

Mrs. Black was a member of Apollo United Presbyterian Church, where she was a deacon, an elder, and member of the women's group and church bell choir. She also was a member of the Fort Hand Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, J. Paul Black; two sons, Dr. Edgar R. (LaDonna) Black of Rochester, N.Y. and Robert P. (Denise) Black of Milford, Mich.; and a sister, Frances Ballinger of Massachusetts.

Also surviving are two granddaughters, Paula A. (Jason) Peszko of Garden City, Mich. and Jennifer L. Black of Milford, Mich.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy J. and Rose Calhoun Sharp.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the GERALD J. MEDICE FUNERAL HOME, North Apollo. Additional visitation will be from 10 a.m. Saturday until time of services at 11 a.m. in Apollo United Presbyterian Church, corner of First Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in Apollo. Officiating will be her pastor, the Rev. John F. Helgeson, and her cousin, the Rev. William N. Jackson.

Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Park, Lower Burrell.
