Dr. Robert C. Kirkwood, affectionately known as "Doc Bob" died Sunday, August 29, 2004, at 7:08 a.m. in his home at 705 15th Street, Lawrenceville, IL.

Dr. Bob was born in Lawrenceville, IL, on December 29, 1918, the second of two sons of Roger and Emily Yeck Kirkwood. His brother Dr. R.T. Kirkwood died in 1998.

Bob attended local schools and after graduating from LTHS in 1936, he entered the University of Illinois for pre-medical education for three years.

In 1940 Bob began Medical School at Northwestern University, graduating in 1944. He interned at Cook County hospital in Chicago, IL.

Dr. Bob served in the U.S. Army during WWII as a 1st Lieutenant Medical Corp. in Manilla, Philippines. He transferred to the A.U.S. 237th station at Batangas on Luzon Island in the Philippines. The hospital there was staffed by Mayo Clinic Medical Personnel including Charles Mayo. It was there that Bob met his wife Stephanie Bovitz.

After his army service of two years, he practiced general medicine in Lawrenceville for a short time.

In 1950, Bob started a four year surgical residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Following this, he was Chief of Surgery at the Veterans Hospital in Popular Bluff, MO.

In 1955, Bob returned to start a surgical practice in Lawrenceville which lasted until his retirement in 1993. Dr. Kirkwood had medical practices in both Lawrenceville and Robinson.

Dr. Bob's interests included thoroughbred horse breeding and racing, geology, music appreciation, poetry writing, bird hunting and fishing. His most memorial experiences were the 25 plus years he volunteered as team doctor for the Lawrenceville High School basketball programs. His usual seat at the basketball games was to sit at the end of the Lawrenceville bench to cheer the Indians and scrutinize the referees. He was inducted into the Illinois High School Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame in 1978 as a "Friend of Basketball."

He was a member of NRA, Illinois Thoroughbred Breeders Ass., American Medical Ass., IL Basketball Coaches Ass.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, R.T. and his wife Stephanie.

Dr. Bob is survived by five children, Roger and Ruth Kirkwood of Portland, ME, Jo Denison of Lawrenceville, Nancy Hill of Bridgeport, Jill Kirkwood of California; his sister-in-law, Jeneva Kirkwood of Lawrenceville; six grandchildren, Matt Harr, Mark Denison, Andy Denison, Andrew Chapman, Stephanie Hill and Lucy Hill; three great-grandchildren, Landon, Larin and Larissa Harr.

Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 4, 2004, at the Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, IL, followed by graveside rites by the VFW and American Legion. A memorial reception will follow at the Lawrenceville Elks Club.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials may be made to the following: Lawrence County Memorial Hospital Emergency Room Project, Lawrence County Camp Girls, Lawrence County Dist. Library, Robinson High School Academic Foundation, or the Kirkwood Athletic Fund through the Old National Bank of Lawrenceville.
