Jeanne Garaicotchea was born in Estérençuby (Basque: Ezterenzubi), a commune in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department in south-western France. It is located in the former province of Lower Navarre, the daughter of Pierre and Marie (née Intchope) Irigaray.

Chico Enterprise Record, Wednesday, May 19, 1993, pg 3D: Jeanne Garaicotchea. Durham.---A vigil service for Jeanne Garaicotchea, 95, of Durham, will be held at 7 p.m. Friday in the Newton-Bracewell Chico Funeral Home. She died Friday, May 14, 1993, in a Spokane, WA, hospital.

Mrs. Garaicotchea was born April 6, 1898, to Pierre and Marie Irigaray in Esterencuby, in the Basque province of Basse Navarre, France. She came to the United States in 1921, and married Frank Garaicotchea in Chico in 1923. They lived in Vina until moving to Durham in 1933.

Mrs. Garaicotchea spent most of her life as a homemaker, and also worked as a cook for some time. She loved children and worked as a nanny in France and the United States before she got married. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church for more than 60 years, the St. James Guild and Altar Society and a longtime member of the Durham Grange and the Dayton Service Group. Mrs. Garaicotchea had been living with her granddaughter in Spokane for the past eight months.

---- Survivors include two daughters, Marguerite Compton of Seattle, WA, and Rosalie Cartwright of Dayton; a sister, Graciana Cassassus of Corning; and six grandchildren and six great-grand children. Her husband died in 1965.

Interment will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Cemetery in Red Bluff. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dayton Service Group, St. James Catholic Church Missions Council or the Durham American Legion and Auxiliary Scholarship Fund, in care of the funeral home.
