Gerald Patrick Ortega, age 40, a resident of Manuelitas, N.M., passed away early on Sunday morning, Dec. 31, 2006, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Santa Fe, N.M., in the loving arms of his wife and family after a valiant battle with cancer.

He was born on Jan. 25, 1966, in Las Vegas, N.M. to Candido Ortega and Theresa Romero Ortega.


He was united in marriage to Kelly Korte on Nov. 19, 2005, at the Immaculate Church in Las Vegas.

He graduated from Robertson High School and attended N.M. Highlands University. He then served in the United States Air Force for four years. He received his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Florida. He returned to Las Vegas in 1997 and received his master's at Highlands University. He was employed as the Distance Learning Coordinator at Luna Community College for the past six years. His hobbies were hunting, guiding, fly-fishing, snow boarding, snow shoeing, hiking, boxing, training, welding, public speaking and salsa dancing. He had a tremendous love for working with children with various programs.

A lifelong Catholic, he was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church and a minister of the Holy Eucharist.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents: Blas and Nieves Ortega and maternal grandparents: Antonio and Rita Romero.

He is survived by his wife: Kelly Korte Ortega of Manuelitas; parents: Candido and Theresa Ortega of Montezuma; sisters: LeighAnn Maniaci and Laurie Hays and husband Randy all of Las Vegas, N.M.; brothers: Antonio Ortega of Albuquerque, and Louie Rael and wife Shanna of Mineral Hill, N.M.; father and mother-in-law: Robert and Barbara Korte of Montezuma; brother and sister-in-law: Kevin R. and Miquela Korte of Las Vegas, N.M.; grandmothers: Enedine Korte and Jennie Mares all of Las Vegas, N.M.; nieces and nephews: Derek Camacho, Taylor Hays, Ezekiel John Korte, Gabriel and Samantha Rael; aunts and uncles: Isabel Diltz and family, Jimmy Ortega and family, Rudy Ortega and family, Leonard Ortega and family, Norma Ortega and family, Irene Roberts and family, Mary Louise Lujan and family, Ernie Romero and family, Jeannie Kramar and family, Lisa English and family, Geralyn Montoya and family, Leroy Romero and family, Louis Romero, Edna Romero and family, Abe and Nancy Silva and family, Kenneth and Ruth Mares and family and Phillip and Louann Mares and family; lifelong friend: Robert Paul Martinez of Gallinas; numerous other relatives and many, many friends.

Rosary devotional services will be conducted this evening at 7 at the Immaculate Conception Church. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church with Father George V. Salazar as celebrant. Interment will follow at the Santo Nino Cemetery in Gallinas with full military honors. Serving as casket bearers will be: Antonio Ortega, Randy Hays, Louie Rael, Robert Paul Martinez, Derek Camacho and Kevin R. Korte. Serving as honorary bearers will be the Luna Community College Staff, Immaculate Conception Marriage Enrichment Program, the nurses and staff at the New Mexico Cancer Center.

He will lie in state at the Rogers Chapel today all day until 5:15 p.m. where family and friends may call.
