James Washington Gladney, a son of Joseph Gladney and the former Miss Nancy Agnes Rosborough, was born in the bounds of Lebanon in Fairfield County, South Carolina in 1831. His parents were both from old distinguished colonial families in the area.

James W. Gladney was married to Miss Eliza Jane Robinson; with whom he had two known daughters:
Mary Agnes (1858–1877)
Alice Jane {m. Harden}(1862–1930)

When the Civil War broke out, James enlisted as a Sergeant in Co. G, 3rd S. C. Battalion Infantry, known as Lauren's Battalion. He served under Capt. A. P. Irby and rose to the rank of 1st Lieutenant. After a few months in South Carolina, the 3rd was ordered to Virginia and assigned to Drayton's, Kershaw's, Kennedy's, and Conner's Brigade; with the Army of Northern Virginia.

On November 19th 1862, 1st Lieut. Gladney was admitted to the Confederate Winder Division Hospital and discharged on the 12th of January. He returned to his unit where he took part at the Battle of Chancellorsville (1-4 MAY 1863). On the march towards Gettysburg, he died at Gaines Cross Road near Flint Hill, Virginia on the 24th of June 1863.

His wife, Eliza made a claim on his back pay in October 1863.
