William Harrison Reiter was born at Niles, Ohio, September 8, 1833 son of Manassa and Eliza (White) Reiter. His mother was of English and his father was of German ancestry. He spent his boyhood at Niles and his fathers' home was only two doors from the home of William McKinley. He and William McKinley were boyhood chums and attended the same school. Mr. Reiter finished his education in the Allegheny college at Meadville, Pennsylvania. In 1862 he accompanied an uncle to the far west and was soon engaged in mining at Florence, Idaho. During his residence in Florence, he was postmaster for six years. He was elected a member of the legislature in the eighth session, and while in the legislature, assisted in creating Idaho County. There he married Miss Julia Aurora Thore Ostland and to this union a son was born, who died in early infancy. In 1890 he moved to the Flathead valley and filed on a preemption. He proved up that original land located about one mile east of this city, near the Stillwater river and built a fine home on it. Mr. Reiter was a veteran Indian fighter, having enlisted in Company H, First California Volunteers and fought in the Pluto Indian war as a scout. Later in 1877, h e participated in the Nez Perce Indian troubles, was wounded three times acted as orderly for General Howard and as a scout performed many dangerous duties. Politically Mr. Reiter was one of the original republicans and cast his first vote in 1865, for the first standard bearer of the republican party, and had never missed an election voting the straight republican ticket. He was a Christian of high standard and favored the Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. Reiter had a great variety of western experiences both as a business man and a rancher, and always kept in close touch with the world affairs He owned a good library, and had been a constant reader, a student, and debater, and was always positive in his convictions and fearless in expressing his views. He led a very active life until his recent illness. He passed away March 13, 1928 at the age of 94 years, 6 months, and 9 days. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Julia Reiter; a sister, Mrs. John Scholl of Maquoketa, Iowa; a nephew Mr. Nerle M. Reiter of this city.
