Taylor Barrow Carr, 92, died Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007, at Moore Regional Hospital. Mr. Carr enjoyed professional success as a hotel operator and retail store owner, but his greatest achievement was the impact he had on the people around him. Known for his positive attitude and optimism, Mr. Carr always had an encouraging word and took great pride in the accomplishments of others. Mr. Carr was devoted to his wife Doris, who died in 2005. He made frequent visits to her grave in Farmville, N.C., the last only 10 days before his death. "I'll see you later sweetheart," he said as he turned to leave the cemetery. Taylor Carr was born June 14, 1914, in Farmville. He attended East Carolina Teachers College in Greenville, N.C., and Smithdeal-Massey Business College in Richmond, Va. He was a sergeant in the North Carolina National Guard. As a member of the Greensboro Jaycees, Mr. Carr was involved in the operation of the Greater Greensboro Open golf tournament in its early years. He was president of the Chamber of Commerce in St. Petersburg Beach, Fla., and active in the Virginia Beach Chamber. Mr. Carr worked in the hotel industry in Virginia Beach, Jekyll Island, Ga., and St. Petersburg Beach, where he managed Gulf Winds Resort Apartments for 12 years. He met his wife of 52 years, Doris Patricia Marsh, formerly of Nova Scotia, in St. Petersburg Beach, where they were married and began raising a family. Mr. Carr returned to Virginia Beach in 1964 and opened one of the first retail carpet stores in the city, Mill End Carpet Shop, which he operated for 18 years, eventually expanding the business to Newport News and Elizabeth City, N.C. The Carrs moved to Southern Pines in 1986, living in Knollwood Village, before moving to Belle Meade in 1999. Mr. Carr is survived by his brother, Dr. James Francis Carr of Searcy, Ark.; two sons, Taylor B. Carr of Searcy and Robert Gordon Carr of Southern Pines; three nephews, Dr. James William Carr of Searcy, John Taylor Carr of Spring Hill, Tenn., and Thomas Dabney Carr of Searcy; four great-nephews and five great-nieces. Mr. Carr was preceded in death by his wife; his father, James Francis Carr; his mother, Eula Barrett Carr; and infant brother, Irvin Hugo Carr. Mr. Carr was a member of Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church in Southern Pines, and was a charter member and trustee of Virginia Beach Christian Church. A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Belle Meade Chapel in Southern Pines. Burial will be Monday at noon at Forest Hill Cemetery in Farmville. Memorials may be made to Butterfield Youth Services, P.O. Box 333, Marshall, MO 65340 and Sandhills Teen Challenge, P.O. Box 1701, Southern Pines, NC 28388. Boles Funeral Home of Southern Pines is serving the family.
