Landing In Mist Is Fatal; Ship Hits Power Wire

Great Falls, Aug. 21 - Fred Buck of Kalispell, pilot, Victor Riley, Kalispell dairyman, and his bride of one month, were fatally injured tonight when Buck's plane struck a power line and crashed as he attempted to make a landing at the municipal airport, southwest of this city.
Mrs. Riley was killed almost instantly, while Buck, a grocer, died as he was removed from the wreckage. Riley died shortly after he was rushed to a hospital. Mrs. Buck was in Great Falls waiting for the party to arrive.

Attendants at the airport, which is not equipped with floodlights, had set out flares and turned on automobile headlights to provide light for the landing, but the weather was misty and the ceiling so low Buck could not detect the power line.
A part of the right wing was torn off when the plane struck the line, and the ship turned over, then struck the earth on its nose. The motor was driven back against the occupants.
W. G. Ferguson, traffic manager for the National Parks Airways, said after an inspection of the wreckage that the plane had no landing light. The pilot had notified the airport attendants he expected to arrive here after darkness settled.
The victims had left Kalispell shortly after 6 o'clock this evening and arrived here about 8:30.
Rain had made flying conditions hazardous. Reports from the airport said the ceiling was but 200 feet.
Buck was a member of a prominent family at Kalispell.
Buck, about 40, and his brother, Harry, former state representative, were engaged in the grocery business in Kalispell. He had considerable experience as a pilot and had been in the flying service during the World War.

Buck leaves a widow and two young children. An uncle of his, Charles Buck, is a county commissioner at Kalispell. The pilot's parents are dead.
Riley has a brother, Valjean, at Libby. His wife was a bookkeeper at Kalispell before her marriage.
