It is speculated that Dean Nilson may have been one of the first soldiers infected with the Spanish Flu during WWI. He was likely infected with the Spanish Flu while on a five-day furlough in Haskell County, Kansas. He returned to Camp Funston, which was housing approximately 56,000 soldiers, in eastern Kansas between February 26 and March 2, 1918. Once there, Spanish Flu cases started to arise. Almost immediately, cases started to appear. With three weeks, there were 11,000+ cases.

The lowest estimates place the number of deaths from the Spanish Flu at approximately 20 million. The more accepted value is between 50 and 100 million dead, with all values dwarfing the deaths from WWI combat. So, Dean Nilson may have been an unwitting carrier of a disease which killed millions.
