Leslie "Les" James Vaughn, 82, of Blackshear died Thursday evening at his residence after a lengthy illness. He was a native of Rowayton, Connecticut and has made his home in Blackshear since 2004. He attended New Haven High School in New Haven, Connecticut, Hopkins Prep School in New Haven, Connecticut, and the University of Miami, in Coral Gables, Florida where he graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration.

He retired from the military where he served in the United States Navy and Air Force. Mr. Vaughn served tours of duty in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. In 1944 he participated in attacks on enemy held islands of Okinawa-Shia, the Japanese held island of Formosa, inflicting severe damage on enemy installations, the airfields and enemy installations on the Japanese held island of Luzon, the air and sea battle of the Philippines, attacks on airfields in the Manila area, and raids which attacked enemy installations in the Philippine Islands. He served on the U.S. Air Anti-Submarine Squadron EIGHT THREE ONE, USS MONTEREY, USS SAIPAN, US Air Anti-Submarine Squadron THIRTY SIX, USS GILBERT ISLANDS, USS LEYTE, and the US Naval Air Facility in Annapolis, Maryland.

Mr. Vaughn was retired from Cells Center in Lake Placid, New York, and Sikorsky Aviation Enterprises. He was a member of Indian River Presbyterian Church and attended First Presbyterian Church in Waycross. He was preceded in death by his mother, Belle Vaughn Crockett, his first wife, Grace E. Vaughn and a brother, Charles Vaughn.

Mr. Vaughn is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Iniguez Vaughn of Blackshear, a son, Leslie James Vaughn, Jr., and his wife Frances of Jupiter, Florida, a daughter, Carol Lynn Olsen and her husband Robert of Ridgewood, New Jersey, a step-daughter, Regina Elaine Iniguez of Orlando, Florida, two grandchildren, Daniel and Haley Vaughn of Jupiter, Florida.

A full military service will be held at 3 pm, Wednesday in the Miles-Odum Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6-8 pm at the funeral home. Sympathy may be expressed by signing online at www.milesodumfuneralhome.com.
