Philip Coats
---Philip Coats, age 64, of 160 Winding Way, Battle Creek, and a longtime Marshall resident, died Thursday, March 21, at Westbrook Manor in Oshtemo where he had been a patient since March 11. Mr. Coats had been ill the past year and has resided at the Battle Creek address since then with his daughter, Pennie Rider.
---Friends may call at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home where funeral services will be held Monday at 11AM with Rev. John Paschen of Ceresco Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Porter Cemetery. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the TB, Emphysema and Health Association of Calhoun County. Envelopes are available at the Funeral Home.
---Mr. Coats was born October 18, 1920 in Eckford Township to Albert E. and Ethel I. (Dupes) Cates. He has lived in the Marshall area all of his life. Mr. Coats served during WWII in the U.S. Army in the European Theatre from 1944-45. He was married July 14, 1940 in Marshall to Eileen McCoy. She preceded him in death January 18, 1979. Mr. Coats worked for the Calhoun County Road Commission for 28 years, retiring in November, 1980. Mr. Coats was a member of Moose Lodge 676.
---Surviving are 3 sons, Craig M. Coats of Ceresco, Gordon E. Coats of Marshall and Steve Coats of Battle Creek; 5 daughters, Mrs. Joseph (Sandra) Thornton of Ceresco, Pennie E. Rider of Battle Creek, Mrs. Charles (Deborah) Cypret of Springport, Mrs. James (Dawn) Drumhiller of Tekonsha, and Mrs. David (Pamela) Ratliff of Marshall; 21 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild; 4 sisters, Mrs. Carl (Laura) Weaver and Ruth Fairbanks both of Marshall, Mrs. Gordon (Marjorie) Weber of Cornelius, Oregon, and Mrs. David (Elsie) Matheson of Battle Creek; 4 brothers, Ralph Coats of Albion, Paul Coats of Olivet, Gerald Coats of Hartford, and Arthur Coats of Battle Creek; and many nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by 2 sons, Meridith Rand Coats in 1947 and Philip E. Coats in 1979; 2 brothers, Leonard Coats in 1967 and Lloyd Coats in 1981; and a sister, Margaret L. Fountain in 1979.
