Arnold Haugen, 92, of Pella and formerly of Decorah, died Thursday, July 4, 2002 at the Pella Regional Health Center Long Term Care in Pella. Funeral services will be held today, Tuesday, July 9 at 11 a.m. at Hauge Lutheran Church in rural Decorah with Rev. Emil Martinson officiating. Memorials may be directed to Vesterheim Museum, Hauge Lutheran Church or to the donor's choice.

Arnold Otto Haugen was born May 11, 1910 at Canoe Valley Stock Farm, Canoe Township, Winneshiek County, to Ole Andreas Pederson Haugen and Karen Petrine Talhaug Haugen. He was the 13th of 15 children, two of which died at birth. Arnold Haugen was baptized and confirmed in Hauge Church. He graduated from Decorah High School in 1930. Arnold Haugen studied at Luther College, Washington State, Washington University and the University of Michigan, where he earned his Masters and Ph.D. degrees.

He married Vneda Johnson of Decorah on September 18, 1934 in Wenatchee, Wash. Arnold Haugen was a college professor and research biologist for the Department of Interior, Fish and Wildlife Division at Michigan State University, East Lansing, Mich.; Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama and Iowa State University in Ames. He retired from Iowa State University in 1973. He enjoyed nature and was an ardent advocate of environmental conservation and believed in wise use of resources for the long term. Dr. Haugen served for 12 years on the Governor's Commission of Outdoor Resources and was an active long-time member of the Sons of Norway. He held membership in and was a leader in many organizations devoted to academics, conservation and outdoor recreation. Honors included the Distinguished Service Award from Luther College in 1968 and the Governor's Award as Iowa Conservationist of the Year in 1965. His hobbies included his lifelong interest in archery and bow hunting and his Norwegian heritage.
