Virgil Brown, the son and grandson of two Civil War Veterans and ministers, Charles O. and Oliver M. Brown grew up in relative calm, with the conveniences of the time. He had the spirit of adventure, and left the comfort of city life to move West and become a cowboy. He moved to Hot Springs, SD. The "real" cowboys were less than accepting of him and showed it by making him the butt of many rough jokes. The last cruel initiation, changed their minds about him. An unbroken horse was saddled & bridled and Virgil was put on the horse, his feet tied under the horse just before it was let loose. The other cowboys then left for Buffalo Gap, not returning until late afternoon. They saw the horse standing completely exhausted. Virgil, still on its back, managed a grin as they untied him and carried him to his bunk in the bunkhouse. He was considered as rough and tough as any of them after that.

His boyhood sweetheart, Viola, joined him in SD and they were married. They had a daughter, Maude Mary in 1890. Their second daughter, Bessie, died one month to the day after she was born in 1892. They then had premature twins, Merle and Marie who died at 42 and 43 days old in 1895. Their son, Charles Stafford Brown was born in 1896.
Virgil also worked as a drayman and teamster, a clerk at Railway Express and a scaler at the Chicago Stockyards.
