Norm Brand was born on December 2, 1922, and passed away on Saturday, December 30, 2006. He was raised in Richmond, VA. His father managed a grocery store and his mother was a rare career woman who worked as a secretary in a hospital. Norm worked as a helper to a friend from the age of 12, who taught him how to drive a car and fix all types of small equipment. Norm was a Military Cadet in High School. He joined the Navy as a Seaman and was soon trained to be a Radioman. He rose in the ranks fast and was soon working in the Naval radio station in Orlando, FL. His career then took him to North Africa as a Navy courier during WWII. He continued on to Dearborn, MI and San Francisco, CA, where he met and married, B.J., who shared the next 61 years with him. The Navy sent them to the island of Guam in the Mariannas Islands and Washington, D.C. Norm was commissioned Ensign and sent to Bremerhaven, Germany for duty, this began his duties as Officer in Charge of his Communications Groups. He was sent to the Navy Communications Station in Todendorf, Germany. He did a year of duty on the Island of Chiniak in Alaska. This duty was followed by a tour at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton, CT. Then he went to Kamiseya, Japan. He completed his 30 year career at Navy Headquarters in Honolulu, HI. Norm helped raise a family of three children with his wife, BJ. He retired from the Navy, and the family came to Albuquerque in 1969. Norm had a passion for cars. After arriving in Albuquerque, he worked for Gerhardt Motors and the Melloy family in some of their car dealerships. He worked for wholesale grocer, Harvey Pullium and also for the Schultz family at "Strictly Southwestern". Norm also had his own business, a Sign Shop for some time. Norm was a proud veteran and a life time member of the American Legion Club 49. He was an avid golfer and "watcher of golf" and loved it until the moment of his death. He was a good husband, loving father and friend. His wife, B.J.; his children, Norman, Sue, Sallie; their spouses, Linda, John, and Jim; his grandchildren, Lia, Juliana, Marlo, Angela, Amber, and Lyla; and his great-grandchildren, Tasha, Bob, Jacob, Moses, and Austin, will miss him. Graveside Services will be held on Friday, January 5, 2007, 10:30 a.m., at Santa Fe National Cemetery Memorial Services will be held on Friday, Saturday, January 6, 2007, 10:00 a.m., at French Mortuary, Wyoming Blvd. Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to New Mexico VA Healthcare System, Volunteer Services #135, 1501 San Pedro SE, 87108. French Mortuary, Inc. 7121 Wyoming Blvd. NE (505) 823-9400
