Cary - Grady R. Galloway, 86, died Saturday, Nov. 26, 2005.

He was born April 13, 1919, in Whittier to Elbert and Sarrah Ward Galloway. Grady grew up in Jackson County on a mountain farm. After graduating from Western Carolina University in 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and was well trained by the U.S. Navy for what was ahead of him in the war.

Grady was deck officer on a Coast Guard ship and participated in five invasions including the D-Day Normandy Landings. In the Salerno landings in Southern Italy he won the Silver Star for outstanding services in locating the landing beach at night and keeping the enemy busy with rocket fire while our troops landed safely.

In civilian life after the war he wanted to work in an area where he could be a part of something beneficial. Vocational rehabilitation was in its early stages of development helping handicapped people to overcome problems and becoming part of the mainstream workforce. He started work as a counselor in the Western North Carolina offices of Vocational Rehabilitation in 1946 and transferred to the Raleigh office in 1965. He remained there until his retirement in the 80s. The early part of his retirement were the good years, working with volunteer groups, the elderly, with active memberships in Raleigh Host Lions Club and in Cary First Baptist Church. He also enjoyed extensive travel.

His final years were his final battle with Alzheimer's. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff of N.C. Nursing Home in Fayetteville for their kindness and caring.

He is survived by his wife, Irene of Cary; son, Neal Galloway of Hillsborough; daughter by a previous marriage, Karen Szczecko of Henderson; sister, Birdie Vogler of Rutherfordton; and two grandchildren, Megan and Leslie Szczecko.

The graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Hyatt Cemetery in Qualla community near Sylva.
