Edina man, 83, Killed in collision
Ediina, Mo., feb. 6. — Sam Garfield Mitchell, 83, of Edina, was killed instantly when a pick-up truck he was driving collided head-on with an eastbound tractor-trailer driven by Richard Lee James, 26, of La Belle, Friday afternoon at 5:50 on Route 6 at the east edge of Edina.
James, who was taking a load of hogs to the Novelty sale barn sustained an injury to his back and was treated by a local doctor.
According to police Mitchell pulled into the path of the tractor-trailer. Both vehicles were demolished. None of the hogs were injured, police said.
Knox county coroner A. G. Rimer stated that there would be no inquest.
Funeral services will be Sunday afternoon at 2 n the Hudson-Rimer funeral home here with the Rev. Allen Vancil officiating. Burial will be in the Bee Ridge cemetery south of here.
Mr. Mitchell was born in Knox county May 27, 1882 [sic], a son of William Thomas and Rowena Murphy Mitchell. He was married to Mabel McKenzie, Oct. 6, 1906. She died April 5, 1956. He was a membe rof the Bee Ridge Methodist church and a 45-year-member of the Knox county Farmers Mutual Insurance company.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Clara Strickler of Edina; a sister, Mrs. Sam (Lyda) Sanderson of Kansas City, Mo.; a brother, John H. of Oregon City, Ore.; two grandchildren, David Strickler of Edina and Mrs. Byron Fowler of Rutledge; and seven great-grandchildren.
