She was a lifelong Richmond resident, fifth generation Texan, and descendant of Austin's Old 300. Born in Richmond, TX., her parents were Sydney Warren and Lizzie Wessendorff Davis. She was a graduate of Sam Houston State, served in the Women's Army Corps during WWII and enjoyed a 38-year teaching career, mostly in Lamar CISD. She was Lamar's first "Teacher of the Year" in 1966. Gov. Dolph Briscoe appointed her to the Texas Youth Activities Committee. She was a member of St. John's UMC where she served in many capacities. She is survived by daughters, Rhonda Reading Tippie and husband, Jim, and their granddaughter, Tiffany Bennett, all of Whitewright, Texas; Renee Reading Turner and husband, Jack, of Brenham; stepdaughter, Carol Reading Tielkemeijer and husband, Bert, of College Station and their daughters Miranda Mullins of Katy and Lindsay Tielkemeijer of the Dallas area; one sister, Virginia Scarborough and her husband, Sonny, of Richmond; brother, Frank B. Davis and wife, Elaine, of Houston; three sisters-in-law, Arlene Davis and Mary Ellen Davis both of Richmond, Maxine Bumstead of Houston; nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, George A. Reading, Jr.; her parents and three brothers: Tonie, Tommy and Syd Davis.
