J. Bill Shirley

J. Bill Shirley, 72, of Vandergrift, died Monday (April 28, 2003) in his home.

Born June 26, 1930, in Kiski Township, he lived in the Kiski Valley all his life.

A veteran, he served in the Korean Conflict with the Army as a tank operator.

Mr. Shirley was a truck driver at the former Breman's Express in Leechburg for 35 years and at W.W. Rearick Excavating in Kiski Township. He was a member of the Teamsters.

He was a life member of Vandergrift Fire Department #1, the Pennsylvania and Armstrong County Firemen's Associations, the Western Pennsylvania Firemen's Association where he was a member of the Old Timers and High Hatters, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion, both in Vandergrift, the Apollo Elks and the Lithuanian Club in East Vandergrift.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Mona Freshwater Shirley; two daughters, Diana Lawhorn of Kiski Township and Denise Jackson of Vandergrift; three grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; five brothers, Pete Shirley, Albert Shirley, Robert Shirley and Richard Shirley, all of Kiski Township and Ronald Shirley of Arizona; and three sisters, Jean Marchitelli of Rochester, Pa., May Sipe of Kittanning and Geraldine Casella of Kiski Township.

He was preceded in death by his parents, J. Louis and Emma Walker Shirley.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in DUNMIRE-KERR FUNERAL HOME, 244 Franklin Ave., Vandergrift, where a service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Boiling Springs Presbyterian Cemetery, (AKA Fairview Cemetery), Kiski Township.
