Devney Mercomes Mack Jr., age 64, a resident of Fort Scott, KS, died January 2, 2007, at the Mercy Health Center following a brief cancer illness. He was born Oct. 8, 1942, in Kansas City, KS, the son of Devney M. Mack Sr. and Doris Simpson Mack.
He married Judy Pierre January 29, 1969, at Bedford, England.
Devney was a 1960 graduate of Fort Scott High School. He then attended Fort Scott Community College and later received his Master's Degree from Pittsburg State University.
Following high school Devney served for eight years with the U.S. Air Force.
He then worked as an assistant director for urban renewal in Fort Scott and later for the department of Social and Rehabilitation Service.
He also taught history at Fort Scott Community College and at the time of his death was employed as a history teacher at Penn Valley Junior College in Kansas City, MO, pastor of the Shiloh Baptist Church of Fort Scott and was currently the associate pastor of the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church of Chanute. He was active with church work and was Dean of Christian Education for the Neosho Valley District.
Survivors include his wife, Judy, of the home; two sons, Devney M. Mack III, Rogers, AR and a son Craig, of Tulsa, OK; two daughters, Cynthia Mack, Fort Scott and Estella Lamfu, Tulsa, OK. Also surviving is his mother, Doris Mack of Fort Scott; thirteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father and a grandson.
Rev. Otis Crawford and Rev. Christopher Culbreth will conduct funeral services Jan. 8, 2007, at the Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel, Fort Scott. Burial will follow in the U. S. National Cemetery; where Military Honors will be provided by the Olson Frary Burkhart Post No.1165 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
