OTTUMWA - Joy A. Walker, 87, formerly of 1511 N. Jefferson, died at 11:25 a.m. November 20, 2016 at Vista Woods Care Center.
She was born April 25, 1929 in Aurora, NE to Robert Eden and Alice Lewis Coffey. She married Sherman E. Walker on September 25, 1949 in Phillips, NE and they were married 49 years. He preceded her in death August 9, 1999.
Joy was a 1946 graduate of the high school in Phillips, NE and she attended the University of Nebraska for one year. She taught in a rural school in Hamilton County for one year. She attended Ottumwa Heights College, graduated from William Penn College and earned a master's degree from the University of Iowa. She taught at Evans Junior High School for 21 years.
Joy served as State President of the Iowa Reading Association in 1975. After retirement, she served as president of the Wapello County Retired School Employees Unit and was co-ordinator for District 5 of Iowa Retired School Personnel Association.
Joy was a longtime member of Wesley United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school, directed the children's choir, served as organist and headed up the kitchen for funeral and other dinners.
Joy is survived by two daughters, Carol Walker Patterson of Cincinnati, OH, Barbara (Ted) Nixon of Cantril; a son, William S. (Camilla) Walker of Ottumwa; 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters; three brothers and a son-in-law, Robert Patterson.
Joy's family would like to thank the staff at Sylvan Woods, the Haven and Vista Woods Care Center for their care.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Shrimplin officiating. Burial will be in Ottumwa Cemetery.
