"Miss McKinney, 15, Killed When Jeep Overturns - Only Daughter Of Prominent Family; Miss Haskell in Shock - Tragedy struck a prominent Titusville family on Thanksgiving Day when the only daughter was killed - about a mile from her home - after her canvas-top Jeep skidded on an icy curve and rolled. The victim, Lydia (Lee) McKinney, 15, daughter of Mrs R Bruce McKinney of the North Perry Street Road, (Titusville, RD 1), died about 2:40 pm while being taken to the Titusville Hospital by a motorist who chanced on the scene. The Titusville High School sophomore died of a fracture of the base of the skull, according to Dr C M Sonne, deputy county coroner. She also suffered fractures of both jaws and abrasions of the face and body. The only other passenger in the Willys Jeep, driven by Miss McKinney, was Charlotte Haskell, 15, daughter of Mr and Mrs John S Haskell of 517 N Perry St. The girls were cousins. Miss Haskell, who had run to a farmhouse for aid, was admitted to the hospital, suffering from shock. She escaped injury. Safety Belt Saved Life - Although she was in no condition to be questioned, Dr Sonne quoted the attending physician as saying Miss Haskell told him she had the safety belt fastened on her seat, probably saving her life. Miss McKinney, the girl was quoted, had failed to secure her safety belt. The one-car mishap occurred on North Perry Street Road (Legislative Route 20135) about one-fifth of a mile north of the gravel crossroads at the north end of Terrace Farm...Dr Sonne said he expects to issue a verdict of accidental death...Miss McKinney was born on Oct 22, 1941, at Titusville, the daughter of Lydia Warner McKinney and the late Bruce McKinney. In addition to her mother, she is survived by a brother, Louis C McKinney II, a student at Lawrenceville School, Lawrenceville, NJ; her maternal grandparents, Mr and Mrs Alexander N Warner of Titusville; and her paternal grandmother, Mrs L C McKinney of Titusville. The girl was a member of the St James Memorial Episcopal Church. Funeral arrangements, in charge of the Peterson-Bowers Funeral Home, are incomplete."
