Born on June 8, 1917 in Lancaster, Pa., he was the son of the late Harry E. and Anna M. Hershey Wanner and the widower of Dorothy E. Biggs Wanner who died Feb. 12, 2000.
He was a graduate of F&M College, Lancaster where he received his Bachelor of Arts and Psychology. He received his masters and doctorate degree in education from Harvard University. Dr. Wanner was an emeritus professor of psychology and education at Dickinson College where he was a former Dean of the college.
He was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church, Carlisle where he served as an elder. He was a member of the Carlisle YMCA camp committee and founder and president of the Board of the Carlisle Early Education Center. A member of the American and Eastern Psychological Association, he established the psychology program and was the first psychologist for the Carlisle Area School District. Richard was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII serving in the Philippines.
