Son of Silas and Harriet East. Darius was the only son of Silas that survived the Civil War.

Darius joined the 16th GA Regiment Co. F on August 13, 1861 in Monroe, GA. On May 19, 1862, Darius was suffering from dysentery and was transported from the Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond, VA to Lynchburg, VA. He was granted a furlough of 25 days on October 21, 1862 from the Medical Director's Office in Richmond, VA. On October 16th, he was tranferred back to Chimborazo after leaving the Wayside Hospital in Richmond. The Register of Chimborazo Hospital shows Darius was admitted Octber 16, 1862 indicating he had been wounded and received a severe flesh wound in his left arm. He was 28 years old at the time. The November 1862 Regimental Return indicates Darius was wounded and captured at Crampton's Gap. He was captured at Gettysburg July 3, 1863. He became a prisoner of War at the Union's Ft. McHenry then transferred to Ft. Delaware where he remained imprisoned for 2 years. He was exchanged in February of 1865. He was received by the Confederate Army at Boulware & Cox Wharves, James River, VA on March 12, 1865.

His children included 2 sons, William and Jesse, and one daughter, Anne C. East.
