James 'Jim' W. Lane, Sr., 88, of Lakeside, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2007 at his home. He was born Feb. 15, 1918 in Cloquet to George and Lenore (Dwyer) Lane. He spent his childhood in Duluth, graduated from Central High School and took a job with the U.S. Lighthouse Service in April 1938. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard as a Chief Petty Officer from April 16, 1940 until May 1, 1946. During World War II he was stationed first on the East Coast and then in England and LeHarve, France and participated in the Normandy Invasion. Jim wed Mary M. Schlender at St. Rose Catholic Church on July 20, 1943. Jim and Mary lived on the East Coast during his service in the Coast Guard; upon his return from duty they built their home in the Lakeside Addition of Duluth where they raised five children. Jim was a talented carpenter and he built their family home. He was a Business Technician for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company and a long time member of the Communication Workers of America Union. He retired from N.W.B. in 1983 with 36 years of service. Jim was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He served St. Michael's Catholic Church as an usher and volunteered many hours working to re-build and remodel the church and school. In his earlier years Jim loved to hunt and fish, and did so with his children and other family members whenever he was able. Jim and Mary loved to travel and visited many amazing sites throughout the United States and Canada. They also enjoyed rides along the shore, dining out and visits with family and friends. Jim was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary; parents, George and Lenore Lane; brother, and sister-in-law, George and Margaret Lane; and brother, John Lane. Jim is survived by his children, James (Kathy) Lane, Jr. of Perham, Minn., Nora (Ronayne) Packingham of Duluth, Katie (Robert) Loch of St. Cloud, Minn., Richard (Sharon) Lane of Fargo, N.D., and Amy (Peter) Myers of Grand Rapids, Minn.; sister-in-law and her husband, Janice and Jack Ward of Proctor; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the caregivers from the St. Mary's Home Hospice Program. MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL:11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007 with visitation one hour prior to the Mass, both in St. Michael's Catholic Church. Interment at Calvary Cemetery. Memorials preferred to St. Mary's Home Hospice. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, (218) 727-3555.
