The son of Samuel & Mary Jane (Horner) Durboraw, in 1860, he was a farmer living in Mountjoy Township, Adams County. He stood 5' 6" tall. Later in life he worked as a surveyor and served terms as justice of the peace.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in West Chester, Chester County, July 19, 1861, mustered into federal service at Baltimore, Maryland, July 26 as a corporal with Co. K, 1st Pennsylvania Reserves (aka 30th Pennsylvania Infantry), and served for a time as acting commissary sergeant. He was lightly wounded at the battle of Charles City Crossroads (Glendale) June 30, 1862, and injured again at an unknown date when someone dropped a cannonball on his foot. Due to his disability, the army stripped him of his rank. He transferred to the Signal Corps November 1, 1863, and honorably discharged at term's end June 11, 1864.

He married Margaret E. Conover September 1, 1867, and fathered Mary Jane (b. 08/25/65 - only survivor of triplets), Milton Conover (b. 11/19/66), John Samuel (b. 02/10/68), William G. (b. 03/06/69), Addison Horner (b. 02/11/71), Isaac Newton (b. 05/28/73), Charles Henry & Robert H. (b. 09/17/76), Martha Emma (b. 08/28/80), and Margaret Elizabeth "Mary" (b. 05/07/84). He died from injuries sustained in a fall from a barn he was helping to tear down. His obituary calls him "Squire Durboraw," so he was a man of some standing in the community. His stated age at death of 57-3-14 calculates to a birth date of April 1, 1838.
