Nannie Black Walton was born in Hampton, in what was then Elizabeth City County, VA. Her parents were Reed Sample Black of Milroy, PA, and Ann Augusta Caine Black of Fox Hill, VA. She married Gilbert Scott Walton of Hampton in 1924, and they had seven children. She and Scott went into the grocery business, and later opened Mrs. Walton's Sandwiches, which remained in business from 1948 until 2003. She is buried next to her husband.
