William "Bill" Nichols, 73, of Lead passed away peacefully Thursday, December 22nd at his home following a lengthy illness. He was cared for during his final days by his wife of 26 years, Nira Nichols and their blended family of his sons, her daughters and their spouses.

Bill was born April 26, 1933 in Lead to Hugh and Hilma (Aarni) Nichols. His wife Nira and their pet cat Tinker Bell survive him and reside at the home he loved and cared for on Mill Street for over 50 years. Bill enjoyed and treasured his large extended family.

He married Nira Napton-Michael in 1980 and became stepfather to her six children.

Immediate family include; eldest son Michael; his wife Marsha and grandchildren Jess and Ellise Nichols of rural Deadwood; son Jerome, his wife Donna and granddaughters Katie and Julia Nichols of Rapid City. One brother, Hugh Nichols of Deadwood and three sisters; Sarah Fardig and Betty (Richard) Brown and family from California. Helen (Lynn) Harris and family in Arizona. Bill attended Lead schools and began working for Homestake Mining Company in 1949. He worked various positions and retired as Master Warehouseman in November of 1992 after 43 years of service. Hunting, fishing, building and antiquing were favorite hobbies. A carefully selected collection of carbide mine and railroad lamps became his pride and joy. During his son's younger years, Bill spent time as a Boy Scout troop leader and Sunday school teacher.
