H.H. "Spud" McLeod

H.H. "Spud" McLeod, 86, died Saturday, July 10, 2004; he passed away at his residence in Abilene. Funeral services are 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 13, 2004, at First Baptist Church of Trent with Rev. Price Mathieson, Rev. H.B. Terry, and Rev. Freeman officiating.

Burial will follow in the Trent Garden of Memories, Trent, under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater. He will lie in state at the Trent Baptist Church one hour prior to the service.

Spud was born November 19, 1917 in Trent. He married Dene Strawn on May 25, 1954 in Abilene. Spud was a member of Wylie Baptist Church and a longtime farmer and rancher. He was also a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy Seabees at Iwo Jima. Spud had lived in Abilene for the past 15 years, moving there from Trent, where he was a past Sunday school secretary at the First Baptist Church in Trent.

Spud was active in the communities he lived in, having served as past Director of Home State Bank in Trent and a past Trent ISD board member. He was an avid supporter of 4-H and FFA programs. Spud was a past Abilene livestock show swine superintendent. Spud was honored by being named Outstanding Conservation Farmer in the Middle Clear Fork Conservation District. He was also named Outstanding Conservation Farmer in 1965 by the Abilene Lions Club. Spud was an innovator, introducing new grasses, Kleingrass and Blue Panic, to dry land farming in the Big Country.

He was a great husband, dad, brother, granddaddy, poppy, uncle, and friend to all. His memory will always be cherished.

Survivors include his wife, Dene McLeod of Abilene; three sons, Robert Seago of Sweetwater, Tom McLeod of Sherman, and John McLeod and wife Barbara of Abilene; one daughter, Carol Phillips and husband Bob of Amarillo; sister, Helen McLeod of San Antonio; grandchildren, Taylor Seago, Brooke Seago, Whitney Seago, Matthew McLeod, Austin McLeod, Trent Phillips, Troy Phillips, Todd Phillips, and Tessa Phillips; and special nephew, Bob Bowers and wife Linda of Clyde.
The family would like to send a special thank you to his care giver, Kayla Garner.

Pallbearers will be Ricky McElmurray, Bill Hamner, Rex Bland, Lloyd Williams, Billy Williams, Tad Williams, Warren Dozier, and Donald Rutledge. Honorary pallbearers will be Sherman Driggers, Clovis McElmurray, John H. Swinney, Red Shafer, Don Kinsey, Rudy Olivera, Jay Moses, Charlie Hobbs, Bill Burgess, Herman Lancaster, Frank Herring, and Robert Simmons.

The family requests memorials be made to Hospice of the Big Country, 4601 Hartford, Abilene, Texas 79605.

Family visitation will be from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday at McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater.
