John Junius Strong was born May 17, 1920 in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. He grew up on a farm in Sultan, Washington, developing a strong work ethic at a young age. In 1934, the family went to the Chicago World's Fair, traveling about 300 miles a day in a 1929 Model A Ford. Perhaps this was the beginning of John's lifetime love of travel and adventure.
Joyce and John traveled throughout the U.S., and they enjoyed several cruises and took trips to England, Japan, Europe, Mexico, and Costa Rica. John served in the Navy during WWII and was a survivor of the sinking Yorktown during the Battle of Midway. He returned to the states long enough to marry his high school sweetheart, Joyce Illman. They were married 63 years. John returned to sea and served in may battles in the Pacific. John had a successful career working for Cochran Electric. One of his many interesting jobs was wiring the torch on the top of the Space Needle. John worked as a journeyman electrician and project manager, specializing in hospitals.

He had many hobbies and interests, including playing the violin, woodcarving, camping, gardening, history, and travel. He loved to go fishing at the "lake house" on Whidbey Island. He belonged to the Masons, the Audobon Society, the Sky Valley Historical Society and the Democratic Party.

John died December 7, 2006 at the Evergreen Hospice with his family at his side.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce; and oldest daughter, Linda.

He is survived by his siblings, Kit and Bill; children, Cheryl (Gene) and John (Yan); grandchildren, Kris, Jen, and Wesley; and great-grandchildren, Mary and Sarah. John was a hardworking, honorable family man and will be missed by all who knew him.

Services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday January 6, 2007, at Purdy and Kerr Funeral Home in Monroe. A brief graveside service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Sultan cemetery.
