George W. Gray, one of the few remaining Civil War veterans of Lawrence County, and one of the most prominent citizens, died at 12:15 last night following an illness of a week. Pneumonia was the cause of death. Mr. Gray first was stricken with influenza which later developed into pneumonia. His condition was considered serious from the inception of the illness.
Funeral arrangements will not be made until a change occurs in the condition of his aged wife who is dangerously ill with pneumonia at the present time.
Mr. Gray was 90 years old, having celebrated his last birthday on January 20 with a postal card shower given him by his Sunday School class and his many friends.
He was born in Knox County, IN, but after the death of his father, he moved with his mother to KY. In 1869, Mr. Gray was married to Lou S. Scott in Bradforsville, KY, and in 1883 they came to IL, settling on a farm in Petty townshio in this county.
Mr. Gray fought for 3 years in the Civil War. He enlisted in the first KY cavalry and served until hostililtiies ceased.
Mr. and Mrs. Gray were the parents of 10 children, 8 of whom are living. Those who survive are: Mrs. Charles Bunyan, Mrs. Luther Warene, Jesse Gray, and Elmore Gray of Lawrenceville; Leslie, Arthur, and Charles W. Gray of Petty township; and Scott Gray of Sumner. An 85 year old brother, Andrew .J. Gray, lives in Sumner.
