Fr John King-2011 -- Daniel Grass had three of Adeline Shepherd sons (his step-sons) serve in the Civil War. Here is a tombstone picture at the Lawrenceville Cemetery for one of them. I read his Civil War Pension File at the National Archives in Washington D.C. last November – about 4 inches thick from all his appeals for better pension benefits. I didn't photograph or Xerox any of it, and will eventually get back to do that. He was a guy with great promise, who just never got things together after the war. He was a druggist in Sumner and the hearing officer thought his medical troubles were mostly self-induced opiate & liquor abuse from supplies that he had readily available at his store, rather than his medical claims stemming from service near Brownsville Texas. Shepherd would squirm in his chair before the hearing officers, and they thought he was lying. He was receiving pension benefits for previous service as a private on a medical condition that had been documented in his records; he wanted increased pension benefits for medical problems as an officer. Shepherd could never make his case, but not for the lack of trying.
