US Presidential Cabinet Secretary. He served as the 27th United States Secretary of Commerce during the Administration of President Ronald W. Reagan from 1987 until 1989. He received his degree in Economics from Yale University and following graduation, he worked for a New York City advertising firm. During World War II, he served as a lieutenant with the United States Navy. In 1946, he joined Armco Steel, a company founded by his grandfather, and went on to become chairman and CEO, before retiring in 1982. From 1979 until 1984, Verity was co-chairman of the US-Russian Trade and Economic Council. Additionally, he served as chairman of the United States Chamber of Commerce from 1980 until 1981. Verity was selected by President Reagan to succeeded Malcolm Baldridge as Secretary of Commerce, when Baldridge died suddenly in a horse riding accident in 1987. During his tenure at that capacity, Verity strengthened trade with the Soviet Union in the fields of energy, medicine and construction. He died of complications from pneumonia.
