Mabel Johnstone Rae died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006, in Spokane, Wash.

She was born in Frazer, Iowa, May 21, 1911, one of eight children of Bertha and Edward Johnstone. She moved to Gebo, Wyo., where she finished her education. She met and married her beloved husband, Bill. They were married 67 years and had four children. Bill and Mabel moved to Butte in 1937.

Mabel worked many years at Crest Nursing Home.

She is survived by her daughters, Marilyn and Joe McKernan of Anaconda, Carolyn and Les Blom of Spokane; sons, Jim and Mary Ann Rae of Spokane, Ron and Nancy Rae of Helena; and sister, Ruth Woolman of Vacaville, Calif. She will be remembered by her 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and special niece, Alice Rae of Butte.

Mabel and Bill spent many summers camped on the Big Hole River and made many friends.

Her beautiful paintings are displayed proudly in the homes of family members. Her grandchildren all remember her wonderful storytelling and have great memories of staying with their grandma. Mabel was an avid reader and will be remembered by her warm smile, great sense of humor and loving heart.

The funeral will be held Saturday, Jan. 6, in Spokane. Placement of ashes will take place at a later date.
