Greek Statesman. He served as the President of Greece from March 10, 1995 to March 12, 2005. He studied law at Athens University and from 1954 to 1974, practiced law as a member of the Bar Association of Patras. He first became involved in politics in 1958 and six years later, was elected to parliament. He later served in the parliament as a member of the New Democracy party from 1974 to 1985. From 1974 to 1981 he served in various government ministerial posts. In August of 1985 he withdrew from the New Democracy party and formed a new party, Democratic Renewal (DIANA). He was elected to parliament as a member of the new party in 1989. In 1995 he was elected to the first of two terms as his nation's president and then was re-elected five years later . During his presidency, which spanned from 1995 to 2005, he was the most popular political figure in the country and received many honorary foreign awards. He passed away after a bout with pneumonia.
