Memphis, TN - Herbert John Fox, Sr., age 91, died peacefully in his sleep in the early morning hours of Saturday, November 19, 2016, while dreaming about the Cubs for the 15th straight night since they finally won the World Series. Mr. Fox is survived by his wife, Edith, his wife of 68 years, and eight children: Catherine Louise Fox, Herbert John Fox, Jr., James Bennett Fox, Kevin Patrick Fox, Timothy Joseph Fox, William Emmett Fox, IV, Judith Ann Fox-Pendergrast, and Edith Mae Fox. He was also preceded in death by his daughter Mary Dorsey Fox. He also leaves behind 16 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and one great great-grandson. John is a veteran of World War II, where he served with distinction as a Marine. He was a member of the 4th Marine Division, and assigned to the Fleet Marine Force-Pacific-5th Amphibious Tractor Battalion. He was in the initial wave of the battles at Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima, where he was wounded in battle. Based on his heroics, he earned several decorations and medals, including the Purple Heart, Gold Star, Presidential Unit Citation, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with three Bronze Combat Stars, World War II Victory Medal, and the Honorable Service Lapel Pin. He grew up in Chicago, the son of William Emmett Fox and Lillian Mae Fox. He is survived by his sister Virginia Whitten and is preceded in death by his brother William Emmett Fox, Jr. As a child, he spent many afternoons at Wrigley Field watching his beloved Cubs. He moved from Chicago to Memphis when he was 15, where he later met Edith. John and Edith later married in 1948. After retirement, they moved to Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. John enjoyed golfing at the Santa Rosa Beach Club. John and Edith later lived in St. Augustine, Florida until they moved back to Memphis in 2015. Visitation with Rosary will be 4-6 p.m., Monday, November 21 at Canale Funeral Directors. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 22 at St. Louis Catholic Church, 203 S.
