Obituary of Bernadine Looij Chako:

Bernardine Chako

Virginia Beach - Mrs. Bernardine (Inez) Chako passed away peacefully this past week after leading a full 90 year life as a devoted spouse, mother, grandmother, and role model to those she touched along the way.

Born in 1926 in Haarlem, Netherlands, to Jan Nicolas van Looij and Ida Vandenburg, cousin of renowned painter Jacobus van Looij, she was the youngest of three daughters. Educated in Utrecht, as a teenager she was part of the citizen Nazi resistance during World War II, and worked in her early 20's at Dutch National Railways, before marrying Dr. Nicholas Chako in July 1952. The newlyweds then immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island, New York, and she naturalized as an American citizen later that September. Living first in Brookline, Mass., she worked two years at the Joslin Clinic in Boston, then when they moved to Greenwich Village, New York City she became vice president at Tradition Records producing mostly folk music, including the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, Jean Ritchie, and Odetta, and influencing many local artists like Bob (Zimmerman) Dylan. She and her husband later settled in Queens, New York, after he became full professor at Queens College. A gifted artist in many media, with an uncanny eye for design, she joined and became a leading fixture in the Art Students League of New York, contributing works and mentoring others for 30 years. Along the way, she was involved in many philanthropies, became the community gardener extraordinaire, and always made sure "you were warm enough." Elegant, forthright, and fair, she was admired by all, beloved by many, and will be missed by both friends and family.

She is survived by her son, Alexander, her granddaughter, Hannah, and her daughter-in law, Debra, who live in Virginia Beach, and two first cousins, Marcelle and Jan, who live in Amsterdam.
