Benjamin H. Hess Jr., 92, passed away early Friday morning, November 18, 2016 at the Mennonite Home where he had resided with his wife of 70 years, Elma Fahl Hess. Born in Elizabethtown, he was the son of the late Benjamin H. Sr. and Grace Shank Hess.
Mr. Hess graduated from Elizabethtown High School in 1942 and Elizabethtown College, Class of 1948 with a degree in accounting and business. He began his stellar business career beginning with managing several local shoe factories. Later, he became the owner of the former Hess - Ulrich General Motors dealership, now the Whitmoyer Auto Group. In 1994, he was elected as the Lancaster County Controller, with whom he served until his retirement in 2001.
A member of the Grace Baptist Church, Lancaster, he served in the U.S Army Air Corps during WWII and later achieved his private pilot license.
In addition to his wife are his daughters, Carol, wife of Arthur Hagy, Stevens, PA; Cindy Hoover, Landisville; grandchildren, Cherie Rathman, Michelle Manthey, Kim Saragih, Beth Wolfe and Ben Hagy. 15 great grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by his brother, Eugene F. Hess.
Funeral services will be held from the Oreville Chapel at the Mennonite Home, 2001 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, PA 17601 on Monday, November 28, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family. Family and friends will be received on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Grace Baptist Church, 1099 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, PA 17603 in Benjamin's memory would be deeply appreciated.
