Mr. Dean was born July 12, 1920 in Polk County, son of the late Joseph Eli Dean and the late Debbie Yarbough Dean. He joined the U.S. Army on October 15, 1942 proudly serving during World War II. Mr. Dean was wounded twice, with the second wound being very severe and placed him in various hospitals for the next 32 months with a promotion to Sergeant. He saw action in Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe, where he earned these awards: The European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 3 Bronze Stars, a Combat Infantryman Badge, a Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the American Theater Ribbon and the Purple Heart. Mr. Dean served with the 95th Infantry Division, Headquarters Company, 3rd Battalion, 377th Infantry Regiment. On December 18, 1947, he received his Honorable Discharge.
Mr. Dean was a retired maintenance worker for the Frito-Lay Inc. and was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Mae Earle Dean on October 31, 2007; son, Michael Ray Dean; and seven siblings.
Survivors include a son, James Dean and his wife Elizabeth of Taylorsville; five grandchildren, Bobbi-jo Wesley Painter, Michelle Dean Johnson, Grace LaDonna Padgett, Neal Dean and Chase Dean; eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren also survive.
Memorial graveside and interment services for Mr. Dean will be held on Friday, April 29th at 10:30 a.m. in the Georgia National Cemetery of Canton with Brother Tony Lyle officiating. Military honors will be provided by the United States Army Honor Guard.
