Colonel Kimberling served with the Louisville Police Department from 1923-1953. Prior to serving with the police department he had been a logger and served in the US Army which in turn caused him to settle in Louisville. He worked his way up to chief of police in 1941 and held that position for six years.

After retiring from the Louisville Police Department he worked as a civilian police administrator in Japan through the US Army. He later served as chief of the Federal Civil Defense Administration in Washington, DC. and served as safety director of Washington. DC.
