Child Dies When Fire Burns Home

Cindy Lee Ellis, 2, Of Elwood, Is Blaze Victim

Cindy Lee Ellis, 2-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Ellis, residing seven miles northwest of Elwood on the Madison-Tipton County line road, was burned to death when the family home was destroyed by fire at 7:30 o'clock this morning.

Madison County Deputy Sheriff William Brogdon, one of the first official to reach the scene of the tragedy, said that the Ellis house caught fire apparently from a blaze that started around an oil stove.

According to Brogdon, the fire spread rapidly and the interior of the 1 1/2-story dwelling was a mass of flames in a few minutes.

Mrs. Georgia Ellis, 23, the mother, succeeded in getting two older children, Michael, 3 1/2, and Marcia, 4 1/2, out of the house immediately after the fire started. Brogdon says that when she went back into the house to get the third child, Cindy Lee, who was sleeping upstairs, she found the stairway enveloped in flames.

Officials state that Mrs. Ellis tried desperately to go back into the burning house to rescue the younger child and that persons at the scene had to hold her to restrain her from venturing back into the flames.

The badly burned body of the Ellis child was brought from the upstairs bedrooms by a neighbor. The child was found under its cot and was dead when taken out of the dwelling. The father, an employe of the Die Cast plant, Elwood, was called from his work and reached his home soon after the tragedy.

The Ellis home was on the west side of the Madison-Tipton county line road, in Tipton County. Sheriff Jesse Owens, Tipton County, Clyde Owens, Elwood patrolman, and other officials were at the scene of the fire.

The Windfall fire department responded to a call to the Ellis home. Mrs. Ellis was taken to the Mercy Hospital, Elwood.
