Edith Maloney Knight passed away Friday, November 10, 2017. Born in Evanston, Ill. on July 8, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Geraldine (Weber) Maloney. She was predeceased by her husband, Burt J. Knight Sr. (1992), her sister Geraldine Cottom; and her brother Joseph G. Maloney.

A lifelong resident of Oswego, Edith was a graduate of St. Paul’s Academy, Oswego High School and Oswego State University where she earned a Master’s Degree in Education. She was an educator for 25 years in the Oswego City and Mexico Central School Districts.

Edith was a woman of many passions; faith, family, and a commitment to education and service. She was an avid community volunteer and received many merit awards for her good works. She served as Eucharistic Minister, Lector, catechist, and member of St. Vincent DePaul at St. Paul’s Church. She was a volunteer for Friends of Oswego County Hospice, which she enjoyed immensely, and a recipient of the Hospice Volunteer Of The Year Award for her work with correspondence to the bereaved, and participation in their annual Camp Rainbow of Hope event.

Edith served on SUNY Oswego’s Alumni Board of Directors for many years, and was the recipient of the Oswego Alumni Distinguished Service Award. She was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association, Oswego County Retired Teachers Association, RSVP, and the Oswego Teacher’s Credit Union Board of Directors. Edith enjoyed gardening, baking (renowned for her pumpkin and lemon meringue pies), crocheting, and knitting; her mastery of each bringing great joy to family, friends, and neighbors.

She is survived by her four children; Burt (Denise) Knight Jr., of Oswego, NY, Thomas (Terrie) Knight, of Cleburne, TX, Michael (Kenda) Knight, of Powhaten, VA; and daughter, Kathleen Knight, of Oswego, NY, as well as 10 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Edith will take place Thursday, 11:00 AM at St. Paul’s Church in Oswego, New York.
Per her request, there will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Friends of Oswego County Hospice, Inc., P.O. Box 102, Oswego, NY 13126.
Arrangements are in care of the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home.
