Aunt Sarah, as she was familiarly known, had been in failing health for several years. She was next to the oldest of a family of seven children and was born in Devonshire, England on Nov. 8, 1858, the daughter of Mary Scovel and Richard Tall. She was united in marriage with Michael Stephens in 1882 and came to America the same year, locating in Ford County, Illinois. They lived there until 1908, when they moved to Missouri, locating on a farm four miles east of Chillicothe and later moving to Bedford where they lived until 1929, when her husband passed away. Since then, she had made her home with her daughter most of the time.
At an early age she joined the Episcopal church, transferring her membership to the Methodist Church at Bedford where she had been a faithful member. Mrs. Stephens was a lovely Christian character of unusual pleasing personality and had a large number of friends who will deeply regret her passing. She apparently was better only yesterday and greeted her friends with a cheerful smile.
Two sons, Billie and Delford, died a number of years ago. Other children are Mrs. Irene Welch of Salt Lake City, Fred and Harry Stephens of Bedford, and Mrs. Cleve Kissick of near Chillicothe.” The Chillicothe Constitution-Tribune, March 28, 1939
